i
laughed so much in this book it was unreal. I know that laughter is the
best medicine, but i also know that making jokes and being extra
cheerful can be a way to deflect attention on oneself, especially when
they are struggling with their own personal demons. And boy did these
characters have their own demons to deal with and it broke my heart. I
love how K Bromberg takes subjects that you figure you've seen them all -
i mean, how many books about firefighters and singer/songwriters exist?
I'm taking a wild guess and saying too many to count, but what made
this one so special, at least for me, is how real it felt. I mean,
Taylor ran away from her own home to avoid the ex that still holds a
part of her heart even after the really crappy thing he did, and i get
it. I truly do. Because you simply can't turn off your feelings from one
moment to the next. You know that you could fall to their empty
promises and grand gestures, so running away is the only logical course
of action. So yeah, i can relate to Taylor in so many ways.
As
for Grady - he's broken, inside and out, but it's the way that he still
wants to help others when you'd think he'd turn his back on them that
is gripping. At the same time, he's also human and the events that have
scarred him so very horrifying and i even found myself wanting to
comfort and fix him. I only wish it would have been that simple to make
him remember that he isn't to blame for what happened [and i could swear
that his partner's name is insanely familiar and keep wondering whether
or not K Bromberg wrote a story about him in the past, so needless to
say that i'll have to go through her books to satisfy my own curiosity].
Combust
may be the second book in the series, but it didn't feel as though i
missed something by not reading Cuffed, and for me, that's a huge plus
because no matter how much i love an author, i don't always get a chance
to read the previous books in series because of my own personal life
and have a tendency to read series out of order. The fact that i can
jump in one book, be curious enough to WANT to read the other books and
then devour the books is the number one key factor on whether or not i
keep going and this, Combust, is the perfect example on why you should
read and keep going with her books - you simply won't be disappointed.
