I lied my way into a band, humiliated them on stage, and got my heart broken by the bassist. Now…we’re on tour together.
Of course my dad, who I haven’t seen since he kicked me out, makes a surprise visit the day before we leave. Spoiler alert: It doesn’t go well. I have to quit the band and go to college or he’s cutting me out of his life for good.
This tour is the best opportunity we may ever have – and it’s already a disaster. We’re broke. We can't stop fighting. And being in such close quarters to Sean isn't exactly helping me get over him. Even though we're just friends now, every time our fingers brush or our eyes catch, my heart betrays me. He's the kind of distraction I can't afford to have right now…no matter how much I wish things were different.
This is one road trip that will be hard to forget…

This is one road trip that will be hard to forget…
Sean was waiting outside when I opened the door, a red towel slung over one bare shoulder. His chestnut hair stood up at all angles, and his blue flannel pajama pants were rumpled from sleep.
He looked at me with those bright green eyes, the kind you swore were fake, and smiled. “You finally done in there?”
I rested my palm against the doorframe, playing cool. Telling my eyes not to wander to the taut muscles in his stomach or the tattoo of quarter notes and barbed wire on his left arm. The one I’d traced with my finger a couple times, wondering why he’d picked it. He never did tell me.
Sean was the guy I wanted. The guy I almost had. The guy I couldn’t have. In short? Sean Ramirez drove me fucking crazy.
I smirked. “Actually, I think I need a few more minutes.”
“Okay.” He brushed past me, hanging his towel on the rack. “Just keep the door shut.”
“Oh, please. You would not.”
“Try me,” he whispered.
Heat inched up my neck, into my face. I’d never seen Sean completely naked, but there was one night when most of our clothes came off and things went beyond just making out. Not sex. For better or for worse, I was still a virgin. But some days I questioned why. What exactly was I waiting for?
“Whatever.” I rolled my eyes, pretending my heart wasn’t pounding out of my chest. “Leaving now.” He hadn’t flirted with me like this since we were hooking up. Did it mean anything? With Sean, I never knew—“guarded” didn’t even begin to describe him.
He touched my arm. “Hey, wait.” His fingers lingered on my skin for a couple seconds before he dropped his hand. “I heard about your dad showing up yesterday. How’d it go?”
“Bryn didn’t tell you?”
He kept his eyes on mine, no hint of an answer in his expression. “I meant between you and him. Did it go okay?”
I shook my head. “I need to put it out of my mind. At least for now.”
Concern flickered across his forehead. “I get it. But if you decide you want to talk…”
“I know. I will. Promise.” I gave him my best reassuring mile and backed out of the bathroom. Away from him. The need to feel his arms around me. Rest my head against his chest. Close my eyes. Breathe.
“See you downstairs,” he said, shutting the door.
We hadn’t hugged since we’d decided to take the benefits out of our friendship. The very short-lived benefits—a week and a half, to be exact. It felt like so much longer at the time.

Series: 7 Brides for 7 Brothers #5
Author: Lynn Raye Harris
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: November 29, 2016

Meet the Brannigan brothers—seven sexy brothers who bring the heart and the heat! From bestselling authors Barbara Freethy, Ruth Cardello, Melody Anne, Christie Ridgway, Lynn Raye Harris, Roxanne St. Claire and JoAnn Ross comes a brand new contemporary romance family series: 7 Brides for 7 Brothers. You won't want to miss a single one!
MAX - Lynn Raye Harris
Former Navy SEAL Max Brannigan is a loner with a strong protective streak and an ocean of survivor’s guilt that drives him to take risks no sane man would take. When he gets the news his billionaire father died and left him a horse farm in Kentucky, he’s busy protecting American military contractors in a war zone. The first moment he’s able, he’ll fly back to the US and dispose of the farm. What does a man like him need horses for anyway? Of all the things his father could have left him, this certainly ranks up there as the most bizarre.
Elinor Applegate lives for her horses, but life on the farm isn’t easy. Once-thriving Applegate Farm has fallen on hard times in the past few years. Only an influx of cash from her mother’s old friend enabled Ellie to keep the family operation going. All her hopes to turn around the business and buy back the land lie on the hooves of a colt destined to greatness. She’s just got to get him there first.
But when sexy, ruthless, infuriating Max Brannigan shows up, Ellie realizes her troubles are far worse than she thought. He knows nothing about horses—and he cares less than nothing about her dreams. To Max, the horses are useless and have to go—in spite of the fact that every encounter with Ellie only makes him want to drag her into his arms and kiss the fire right out of her. But Ellie will fight hard to keep her dreams alive, even if she has to fight dirty. Max has spent most of his life protecting people from danger—but can he protect himself when Ellie launches a full-scale assault against the walls surrounding his heart?

Excerpt
“You don’t know a thing about me, Miss Applegate,” he said coolly. “Not a goddamn thing. And I don’t know a thing about you, but I’m not blind. You have nothing more than some fancy prancing horses here, and while I don’t know much about horses, I’m pretty sure those can’t bring in much money. Not like racehorses. I suggest you cut your losses while you can and find a smaller place where you can keep a couple of animals and continue doing whatever it is you do with them.”
“Whatever it is—” She shook her head as if to clear it. Then she stood, her entire body vibrating with anger. And, yeah, it was wrong of him, but there was something slightly exhilarating about her anger. Her eyes flashed fire and her chin quivered before she clamped down on her reaction. “You need to leave now, Mr. Brannigan. Get off my property and stay off. You can send your realtors and you can list my farm, but I’m not cooperating with any of it until I call my lawyer and find out exactly what you can and can’t do. I have a mortgage and I’m not in default—and I’m not accepting your word as the final authority just yet.”
Max towered over her as he rose from the couch. “First of all, it’s my property. Second, I’ve got some bad news for you, sweetheart,” he said, and her eyes narrowed. Whether it was the bad news or the sarcastic endearment causing it, he didn’t know. And he really didn’t care. “Or maybe it’s good news to you. I can’t sell this farm for a year from the date of my father’s death without your agreement—”
She sucked in a breath, and he knew she was surprised. But he kept going before she could respond.
“—But I also own this place. So long as I do, I’m not staying in a hotel.”
Outrage shone from her eyes. “You can’t stay here.”
He took a step toward her. She didn’t flinch or back down. He admired that about her. It fired his blood, made his heart beat faster. What was it about this woman that got beneath his skin? He didn’t know, but no way was he letting her win this round.
“Yes, I fucking can.”

GOODREADS
Color me purple, but Max by Lynn Raye Harris was so different from her
Hot Pursuit series that I was sad to see it end. It was the type of read that
allowed me to simply enjoy the ride. It wasn't rushed or too slow, it just flowed.
Lynn Raye Harris' love for horses really showed and by the time the book ended,
I wished I could get my hands on a Saddlebred just to see how they differ to
any other I've had the chance to ride in the past (to be fair, the last time I
rode a horse dates back to when I was 14, so quite a while ago). The storyline
had that little touch that made it differ from other books where meddlesome
family members make their own requests from beyond the grave by specifying
terms what must be followed through for at least one year.
Max is a soldier who crushes the stereotype of what it means to have
grown up with money - he's worked for everything he owns and has earned all he
has, even as a child, contrary to what hardworking and passionate about her
horses Ellie believed. Their chemistry was obviously undeniable but what I
loved most was how 'unrushed' it felt - it just came naturally and the two kept
fighting the inevitable. Different than her other novels I've had the chance to
read from her, Lynn Raye Harris did a wonderful work with Max, and I can't wait
to read the rest of the series and compare the different styles from the other
authors.
