Gemma…meets a gardener in shining armor.

I’m fine, at least
that’s what I tell everyone. A series of heartbreaks leads me to move across
the country, hide away in my pajamas, until a sexy gardener at the San
Francisco botanical gardens gets me off my ass. Hell, he saves me when I step
in dog shit. He’s close to perfect.

But the past has a
way of catching up to me. A promise I made my husband before he died keeps me
bound, keeps any chance at love a distant dream. The more time I spend with
Jack, the guiltier I feel for breaking my promise. Everyone’s got their
hang-ups, right?

Jack…can’t stay away from Gemma.

Life is good. I’ve
got a successful landscaping business and I’m an active member of my community.
I know better than most that our tragedies shape who we are. Gemma comes from
the world I turned away from, but I can’t leave this undeniable thing I’ve got
for her alone. I shouldn’t want her, and yet I do.

Being with Gemma
makes me feel like a new man, like I’ve been hiding my true self without even
knowing it. But something from her past keeps us from moving forward. Someone.
Can a simple man compete with a ghost?

The cadence
of my banter falters. “Oh, no. It’s a New York thing. I moved here not too long
ago. I’m still adjusting.”
He shifts
on his feet awkwardly, adjusts the tool belt.
“What
brought you out west?”
I lost all faith in humanity and decided to run
away from my problems.
“Oh, just
needed a change of scene, ya know?”
He gives me
that long, penetrating look again, like he’s trying to hack my brain.
“You from
here?” I ask, wanting him to stop staring at me like a circus freak.
“No, I’m
from San Diego originally. My folks moved us up here when I was ten. I moved
away after college.”
“Oh, how
long have you been back?”
“About five
years.” He clears his throat, his voice faltering.
“Why did
you return?” I ask, just to continue talking. Though I probably should keep my
big mouth shut. It’s the way he says five,
like the word is cursed. I shouldn’t press him for this.
“I was in
an accident. Needed to come back and recuperate.” He strokes down the fade on
the side of his head, his gaze focused on the bench. “That’s all I’d like to
say about that, if you don’t mind?”
“Of course.
I’m sorry I pried. Blame it on East Coast blunt audacity.” The sound of my
laugh is hollow. I should quit while I’m ahead. One month in hibernation and
I’ve completely forgotten how to interact with people.

“Thanks for fixing the bench.” I wave awkwardly then turn away, giving him an easy out.
“No problem, but do you want to take that tour now?”
“Huh?”
“You’re Lillian’s daughter, right? I’m Jack. I’m giving you a tour.”
Oh, just fuck my life. Really? I cannot spend one more second in this man’s company.
“Oh, Jack. Right. You know what? I’m okay. I think I’ll stay here for a little while longer. I can walk around myself.”

Sophie…has stupid awesome sex with a stranger.

New York City summers are hot and sticky, which only makes what I’m feeling for the asshole in my new building even messier. Usually, I quietly reserve my opinions for my news articles, but when Tony argues with me, he tempts me to give in to my crazy. I yell back. He smiles. Something in me melts.

It was only supposed to be one time, but we can’t get enough.

With Tony I’m a new person, brave and unashamed. But anything between us can only be a fling. He’s offered a job in Rome. That’s good, right? With a long history of unreliable relationships, messy emotions are a complication I don’t need.

Tony…has a sexy new neighbor.

I’ve worked my ass off to climb the ladder at my company, even threw away my passion to prove I’m worth something. When they offer me a high position, I should be focused on my work. But no one’s ever spoken to me the way Sophie does. She pushes buttons I don't know I have. Forces me to confront a dream I gave up long ago.

In two months, we go our separate ways. No hurt feelings. No misunderstandings. That’s the deal. She doesn’t need to know I’ll be playing for keeps.

Chapter One

Sophie moves into a new building. There are sexy assholes.

The first time we argue, I feel alive. I’m sweating, my blood’s pumping, and my hair is sticking to my face in the stinking New York City humidity. I don’t know what life really is until some asshole starts screaming at me to move my van from his spot, because it feels so damn good to yell right back at him.
“Get your U-Haul out of my parking spot!”
This guy’s hollering at me from across the street.
“Excuse me?” I call back, convinced he isn’t speaking to me. No one ever yells at me. I’m unassuming and introverted. I’m a wallpaper ninja, blending so well people can’t even find me to yell at me.
But the guy across the street sees me, clear as day.
“Are you deaf?” he yells with slow and exaggerated articulation. “Get your damn moving van out of my spot.”

I’m not the type of person to engage in a verbal fight. I’m quiet-even when someone pisses me off. I roll with the chaotic nature of my beautifully harsh city: a strand of seaweed in the ocean, riding the tides. But after surviving the day from hell, only to be accosted by this bear of a man? I fight back, like I never have before.
“Last time I checked there are no spots assigned to people on this block, or anywhere else in Brooklyn.”
“It’s an unwritten rule.”
I mimic his earlier tone, hitting every consonant and unleashing my New York accent to embellish the attitude. “If you couldn’t tell, I’m moving into the building and there’s an actual written rule that if I double-park the U-Haul, I’ll get a ticket.”
“That’s not my problem, baby.” He steps into the street, waiting for a break in traffic to cross. “Find a new spot.”

ABOUT CERI GRENELLE

I’ve always had an active imagination. An imagination that usually took form in the way of zoning out in the middle of conversations. I eventually decided it was time to share my daydreaming with the world and began to put my musings on paper. It started with Harry Potter fanfiction and grew from there.
I am currently living it up in Northern California after a big move from New York City. And by living it up I mean staying home with my cats, obsessively watching episodes of my favorite TV shows, all of which are extremely geeky, and simultaneously reading the next book on my reading list. I do all this while trying not to pig out on unhealthy snacks. As you can tell, I lead a busy life.

This was my first book read by Ceri Grenelle and it was nothing like I imagined it to be. It was a quick read, at least, it was for me, that shows three individuals who each have their own demons that need to be overcome and meet on one faithful evening that forever changes them. Armstrong, or Armie, is dealing with his newly declared complete blindness, Mitchell, or Mitch, has gone through an unspeakable crime that left him scarred inside and out, and Leighanne, the seemingly confident signer needs to find the courage to show everyone her own songs. Individually they struggle, but together they are able to face about anything.

What surprised me the most was the fact that I had completely mistaken who the dominant in the group would be - that being Armie. Not because of his medical handicap, but because his demeanor when we first meet him suggests he'd need the protection, the support and the rules a Dom could offer him. I love being proven wrong - Armie turns out to be a great Dom and knows what he wants from his two 'natural' subs, he's so sure of himself when it comes to desire, giving pleasure and who he is sexually that it's inspiring. As I mentioned earlier, all three have their own demons to get over, and yet, it's together that they'll be able to overcome them. It was a touching story perfect for the holidays and I am curious to find out more about Ceri Grenelle in the future.
