About HAWKYN:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Larissa Ione comes a new story in her Demonica Underworld series…

As a special class of earthbound guardian angel called Memitim, Hawkyn is charged with protecting those whose lives are woven into the fabric of the future. His success is legendary, so when he’s given a serial killer to watch over, he sees no reason for that to change. But Hawkyn’s own future is jeopardized after he breaks the rules and rescues a beautiful woman from the killer’s clutches, setting off an explosive, demonic game of cat and mouse that pits brother against brother and that won’t end until someone dies.

Aurora Mercer is the half-wytch lone survivor of a psychopath who gets off on the sadistic torture of his victims. A psychopath whose obsessive psyche won’t let him move on until he kills her. Now she’s marked for death, her fate tied to that of a murderer…and to a sexy angel who makes her blood burn with desire…

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

i haven't read all of Larissa Ione's Demonica series - only a few as they appear in the 1001 Dark Nights because, well, 1001 Dark Nights! Here's where i knew i was in trouble - Hawkyn's book made me so very curious about the Demonica world and gave readers the very first glimpse into the new Master & Mercenary crossover series with Lexi Blake.

Now I just want to know more about the angels who are given humans to protect to earn their place in heaven, while so very excited about what this author is working on next. While mixed in with much of paranormal aspects, it didn't feel overwhelming, Hawkyn was an entertaining story about the angel in charge of protecting a serial killer and the victim that the angel saved.

You would have thought that Aurora would have been a bigger force to be reckoned with considering her history, but honestly, i liked the fact that Larisa Ione made her vulnerable. It made her more vulnerable and relatable - while incredibly powerful, she still has limits forcing her to rely on Hawkyn to make it out alive. For his part, i was surprised by Hawkyn because for someone who is the biggest stickler for protocol and has never broken them, he was the first to protect the little wytch.

I enjoyed this book - the getting back to a few character i've read in the past, finding out how the Master & Mercenaries series crossover would happen and at the same time, wanting to cheer for this couple when you'd think their relationship was doomed considering their circumstances, and i can only hoe i won't be waiting too long for the next book!

EXCERPT :

“I want to know why you wear a damned burlap sack and flip-flops every damned day. You have access to anything you want, but the only times you aren’t dressed like a medieval monk are when you leave Sheoul-gra.” Azagoth cocked his head and intensified his focus, leaving Razr feeling like a germ under a microscope. “Is it part of your punishment?”

Razr started. He’d been living in Sheoul-gra and working in Azagoth’s employ for over a year now, and this was the first time his boss had asked him anything that wasn’t work-related.

“Yes,” Razr said, but it was a simple answer to a complex issue.

“Your situation is unique. You aren’t fallen, but you aren’t a Heavenly angel, either. You aren’t even Unfallen,” Azagoth said, referring to the in-between state of an angel who had lost his wings but who hadn’t entered Sheoul, the demon realm, to complete his fall from grace. He glided over to the wet bar and splashed rum into two glasses. “Heaven created a new designation of angel just for you.”

“Yeah,” Razr drawled. “Ain’t I special.” Except he wasn’t. There was another who had shared his status, his former lover Darlah, presumed dead after failing to return from a mission.

A mission that was now Razr’s alone.

Azagoth handed him one of the glasses, and Razr struggled to hide his surprise. And suspicion. The male rarely acknowledged his existence, let alone treated him like an equal. “For some reason, you are special.”

This was really getting weird. Azagoth had never shown any interest in him, but honestly, Razr was shocked that the guy didn’t know more about Razr’s story. He’d figured Heaven would have given Azagoth the full scoop, but apparently not.

“What I can’t figure out,” Azagoth continued, “is why you haven’t managed to take care of your business and get back into Heaven.”

Unable to remain still under this bizarre scrutiny, Razr swirled the rum around in his glass. “It’s not like you give me a lot of free time.”

“So it’s my fault?” Azagoth’s voice was smooth as velvet and just dark enough to raise the hair on Razr’s head. One didn’t just accuse the Grim Reaper of stalling shit. Not if they liked wearing their skin.

“Not at all,” Razr replied carefully, because his skin was pretty useful right where it was. “It’s just that I have limited resources in Sheoul-gra. I need more time in the human and demon realms.”

Title: Razr
Author: Larissa Ione

Well crap. Now i wish i had read each and every single book of the Demonica Underworld series from Larissa Ione. The last book i read from her happens to have been a previous Demonica novella from the 1001 Dark Nights lineup and i won't lie, i should have started back then, but the life happened and now i'm in my current predicament: at the 12th book in the series and still no further into it than the two books i've read so far. Needless to say that... wow. I'm astonished at how much i'm sure i've missed and yet didn't get the full face slap i would have expected in missing as much. I was still able to follow the gist of the story since it did explain the world of Demonica, but it didn't focus on it, rather bringing you to fall for Razr and Jedda and their battle for a cursed gem and their feelings for one another without destroying each other in the process.

It was a quick read, which i'm not sure if i'm disappointed about it or relieved - why? Because i can only imagine was a full length novel would hold as information about everything that surrounds the Demonica Underworld. It must be a truly fascinating world, and one that will leave your reeling because that's what happened to me after reading this book. It was captivating and intriguing to say the least but it also got me wondering what else i missed. Is it really important to start from the very beginning to get the bigger picture? That's what i'm left debating and to figure out on my own while i can't praise another great addition to the series and 1001 Dark Nights lineup!
