So I was at the bar, and a man in dark jeans, a blue Henley, and a sexy beard comes up to me, taking the last seat at the bar. He was broad-shouldered, sexy as hell, and had a deep voice that went straight to the right places.” Alice gave a smoky laugh, and Olivia realized exactly how detailed she’d been just then. Apparently, Derek brought that out in her even when he wasn’t near. “We didn’t speak for a few moments until he finally turned and smiled.” She paused, remembering even as her heart ached. She loved that smile. Loved him if she were being honest. And she could never see him again. “I don’t remember exactly what we said that first time. But we talked for over an hour and had more than a few drinks. He said he was visiting, though I didn’t ask from where.” She figured now that he’d most likely been at the hotel traveling for his job, but she really didn’t know. She hadn’t asked and was afraid she never would. Though now that she thought about it, there had been a tattoo convention near, so maybe he’d been staying for that and not just the shop? “Somehow, we ended up in his hotel room.” “Damn, girl.” “I know. It was so unlike me. It’s still so unlike me. And when we were through with each other, he said he wanted to see me again but couldn’t until he came back to town. So we promised to meet again the next month. Same time. Same place. We made our promises to ourselves, no names, just sex, just time. And we kept with it for four years without missing a month. I can’t believe we made it last as long as we did without finding out more about each other, but we did. And now…and now it’s crazy.” “You called him Derek. So you must know his name now.” “He asked me to call him by his name this last time.” She paused. “And that’s how I realized I knew him.” Alice paused. “You know him? Of course you do. But I just don’t know how.” Then she told Alice about the fact that Derek knew her neighbor and how he’d come over and that everything seemed to be falling apart around her. Instead of heading home like he probably should, Storm went to Everly’s kitchen and got out a couple of mugs and packets for hot cocoa she kept around for the boys. This late, he knew Everly liked chocolate with extra marshmallows rather than coffee, and he wanted to get something warm in her before he left.

By the time she came into the kitchen, he had two steaming mugs of hot cocoa on the counter and a can of tomato soup on the stove. It sounded like a gross combination, but it was the only soup he could find that didn’t have pasta shapes.

“You didn’t have to do all of this,” Everly said, her arms wrapped around her middle.

“I know, but I wanted to.” He didn’t know what else to say, so he handed her a mug.

“Thank you.” She took the hot cocoa from him and wrapped her hands around the warm ceramic. “I don’t think I’m fully processing yet.”

“You don’t have to process yet. You need to get warm and get some sleep. You can deal with things and figure out what you need to do tomorrow.” He let out a breath. “I’m just so fucking sorry, Ev.”

She met his gaze, her eyes filling with tears. “I hate to cry. I hate it. And yet all I seem to be doing lately is crying.”

Storm cursed and set down his mug then pulled hers from her hands. He cupped her face, and she stiffened. “Your store just burned to the ground, and it looks like arson. Cry, Everly. That’s okay. You’re allowed to.”

She pressed her lips together, a single tear falling down her cheek. He brushed it away with his thumb, and her eyes widened. When she took a step back, he knew it was for the best.

Before he could say anything else, she frowned and picked up her purse from where she’d set it on the kitchen table. “There was a note.”

He froze. “A note?”

She pulled a piece of crumpled paper out of her bag. “I don’t know if I picked up the envelope since I just threw things in my bag as I ran out, but I got this letter today. It was addressed to Jackson, so it’s not connected to this I don’t think, but it’s still weird.”

She handed it over to Storm, and he frowned.

I’m still waiting.

“Huh. We should show this to the cops just in case.”

Everly blew out a breath. “I have no idea what I’m going to do.”

He set the note down on the table and pulled her close. “You don’t have to know yet. But I’m not letting you do it alone.” He’d promised himself he’d always be there for her, and yet he hadn’t been enough. He still wasn’t enough.

She wrapped her arms around his middle, and he slid his hand up and down her back, calming himself as much as her. When they pulled away from each other a few moments later, their faces were only a few short breaths apart.

Almost as if he were someone else, as if he didn’t know the consequences, he lowered his head, brushing his mouth along hers. She froze for the barest moment before pressing her lips against his, the pressure a sweet agony he couldn’t comprehend until it was too late.

When his tongue slid along the seam of her lips, she opened for him, their breaths mingling, their bodies pressed tightly together. He almost deepened the kiss until he realized what the fuck he was doing and pulled away, his body shaking.

“Fuck. I’m sorry, Ev. I’m so fucking sorry.”

She blinked up at him, confusion clear on her face.

He didn’t let her speak, didn’t let him say another thing. Instead, he brushed past her, trying to get himself under control and fled from her house.

He’d kissed his best friend’s wife.

His dead best friend’s wife.

There wasn’t a level in hell good enough for him. He’d burn, and he’d deserve it. And yet… and yet he knew he’d never forget the softness of her lips, the taste of her tongue.

Yeah, he would burn.

I've been following Carrie Ann Ryan's releases for a while now and i love how diverse she is. I now that whether she writes her paranormal genre or her alpha men, i'm in for a treat - one that i'll need a fan to make it through her book because it's that hot! I've read the majority of the Montgomery Ink series and just when I think I've found my favorite couple, along comes a new adventure, a new story and a new couple to 'beat'.





Everly and Storm's story touched me - it was emotional, full of love and had a backstory that i'm so glad i got to read because for as long as i can remember, i've always wondered what Storm was hiding. There was a hint as to what he was hiding, but i could never pinpoint exactly what it was. So many questions were answered and i simply couldn't get enough of these two. I have a feeling it'll be difficult to beat this couple as my favorite, but i have a feeling i'll be regretting or changing my mind with the next Montgomery couple!

Harper Rosso cursed and fumbled with the hammer before putting it back in his tool belt so he could answer his phone. He’d thought he’d turned the damn thing on vibrate but had apparently forgotten. The shrill ring had pierced his brain, making his already annoying headache even worse.

Taking a deep breath, he climbed off the ladder, pulled out his phone, and answered, not bothering to look at the display.

He should have taken the time to read the damn screen.

“What?” he barked, tired as hell and ready to get home. The first day of this damn job had taken longer than he’d expected, and he was going to end up behind on his timeline if he didn’t put more work in. When the Montgomerys had hired him for this project—restoring the old Mason Home—he’d done his research and had come up with a decent deadline. That didn’t mean shit when it came to mold, broken moldings, and shitty hardwood flooring. He didn’t have to fix it all today, or even by himself, but he had to at least make a list for all of the others to get started. He was one of the new guys on the Montgomery Inc. team, and if this project went well, the company would hire him on full-time. Everything he had was riding on this. He didn’t want to own his own business, but he wanted to work for those who knew what they were doing.

“Is that how you answer your phone? No wonder you don’t get laid.”

Harper closed his eyes and prayed for patience. Then he remembered he really didn’t give a flying fuck about his brother Justin’s feelings.

“What do you want, Justin? You’ve got two seconds, and then I’m hanging up.”

He could practically see the bastard’s smirk as he spoke. God, he knew it was probably a sin to hate his brother as much as he did, but honestly, the little maggot was lucky Harper hadn’t ended him when they were kids.

Harper inhaled through his nose then exhaled through his mouth, trying to calm himself. Only Justin could send him to violence so quickly.

“You’re such an ungrateful brat,” Justin growled.

“You’re running out of time,” Harper replied.

Justin let out a huff. “Fine, I just wanted to call you so you could congratulate me on my engagement.”

That brought Harper up short. Engagement? Since when was Justin seeing someone? Why Justin thought Harper would care about this development beyond feeling horror for the poor woman was beyond him.

“Good for you. I’m hanging up now.” Any longer, and Harper might have to take his hammer to his temple and end it all for good.

“Don’t you want to know who I’m marrying?”

While normally Harper would have just hung up, there was something in Justin’s tone that forced him to pause. His brother was a little too cocky about something.

And that worried him.

“Fine. Who?”

“Your lovely neighbor, Arianna King.”

Harper blinked, his mind going momentarily blank, his throat dry. “Excuse me?” He couldn’t have heard right. There was no way Ari would fall for Justin. His best friend and neighbor couldn’t even stand to be in the same room with her father’s lackey, his brother, let alone vow to spend the rest of her life with him.

This had to be a joke.

Or maybe a bad dream.

A little less than a year ago, I picked up a book in the 1001 Dark Nights series and loved it. Then, because I couldn't get enough of the author or the series, I picked up another of Carrie Ann Ryan's novels and plowed through it, confirming everything I felt wasn't a one time experience. Now, after reading more than a few of Carrie Ann Ryan's novels, I got to experience Adoring Ink, a novella length story about Holly and Brody who, at one time, tried to make it work but went their own separate ways because Brody couldn't commit or admit his feelings for Holly. And now, together once again, the pair must try to find a middle ground as they deal with one another.





I loved how Carrie Ann Ryan paints her couples - they are real, relatable and sexy as all heck. Who wouldn't want to go through a bucket list with a man like Brody or (for men), a woman like Holly. Watching these two try to avoid dealing with their feelings was the one part where anyone would wish they could shake some sense into them in the hopes of opening their eyes to what's in front of them. I love how Carrie Ann Ryan bring her stories to life and I for one will be watching for her next releases in the upcoming years.
