My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Well
this was interesting. I believe that this is my first novel that i've
read written by Stasia Black, and in a way, i'm really glad that i took a
chance on it. A dystopian/futuristic type of novel, Theirs To Pleasure
takes into consideration that women are all but extinct after a plague
that ravaged the world almost 15 years ago.
Now,
i haven't read the previous book in the series before getting my hands
on this, but i have to admit that it wasn't all that necessary as i
wasn't overly confused on the past, present and what i'm suspecting will
be the next instalment of the series, so that really worked in favor
for this author. While i love reading series, there are some things that
i'm known for it's that i read series out of order until i can get to
the beginning of it and get back to the flow.
I
won't say that i didn't understand how the ratio of 5 men to 1 female
would be able to repopulate the earth, but i have to say that it was an
engaging and i really wanted to keep reading to find out what was to
happen to Shay and Charlie and whether they'd find their place in this
new 'regime'.
I
doubt this will be my last book by this author as she has a captivating
way to develop her stories that will make you really want to find out
what'll happen to her characters from the very beginning all the way to
the end.

again.

Chapter One
CHARLIE
Charlie
blinked blearily at the sliver of sunshine coming through the window where it
wasn’t boarded up. The sun was setting. Another day gone.
He looked
at the wall where he’d just finished scratching a line into the cinderblock
with his fingernail, briefly glancing up the wall at all the similar hash
marks.
Three
months. It had been over three months since he’d woken up in this very
room—covered in his own blood, with a headache so bad he’d been convinced he
was gonna die. He had no idea where he was. A tiny office in a really old
building, he thought. Cream-colored painted cinderblock walls. It had an
institutional feel. Maybe a hospital?
There was a
thick wooden door with a tiny rectangular plexiglass window, but all it showed
was the end of a dark alcove, so no clues there. Through the tiny bit he could
see through the outdoor window, he could only see the plumbing of another
building.
When he’d
first woken up, part of him had wanted to just give up and die. Because no
matter how many times he shouted questions at the guards who occasionally
delivered food and water, no one would tell him anything about his sister
Audrey.
Had those
bastards killed her right there by the spring where they’d knocked him out? Or
did she manage to run away after all?

Here's the thing - Sleeping Beauty was far from being my favorite Disney Princess story. I couldn't even begin to explain why, but there was something about this story that didn't get my attention. When the movie Maleficient starring Angeline Jolie (not my favorite actress in the entire world), holy crap, i drooled. I mean, there was something about this actress and this story that completely drew me in. i loved the fact that there was an entirely new story behind the original Disney movie that explains why this woman? Sorceress? Witch? Queen? Acted the way that she did and does what she does.
So it was no surprise to me that i jumped on the opportunity to read this new book, Queen And The Kingsmen, by Alta Hensley and Zoe Blake since it was about this character that drew me in with the movie. I wasn't disappointed. What i loved about this book was the fact that these two authors took the live action movie and continued on that story, finally giving us adults our silent guilty pleasure. Or at the very least, my silent guilty pleasure. It wasn't a very long book, which i hadn't thought otherwise since it is part of a series that is releasing rather quickly one instalment after the other. The tempo was honestly pretty good, it was engaging and i was hooked and curious to find out what would happen from one page to the next.
I think that my biggest problem was the fact that i wished there was more background on the history between the Queen and the King - does it follow the same history as that from the movies or of the original Disney movie? I couldn't begin to tell you, since i don't even know myself. I think that had i read the previous books in the series before hand might have enlightened me on a few points, so that didn't exactly help me. I wished i knew more about the Kingsmen - are they really sorcerers? Otherworldly type of men? Or simply really big and tall mortal men who know the right people in the right places.
Those are some of my questions after reading this book, and while it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story, it did leave me the 'but' feeling at the end. While it's the first time i read these two as a duo (not individually), it certainly won't be my last since i couldn't even begin to try to determine who wrote which parts.
