“Jax, wait!” She grabs my arm.
“Still not ready to sleep?”
Please God, let her ask me to hold her. That happens in Jera’s romance novels all the time. And okay, the heroes never pop inappropriate wood, but that’s just because they’re a bunch of pussies.
Ava nods, and I can’t quite read the look in her eye. Her hand feels soft on my arm and when it drops away, my skin tingles. “If you want to trade in truth or dare for a bedtime story next time, I rock at Dr. Seuss. Jera’s daughter can’t get enough of rhyming.” I half-smile. “Songwriter’s kid, you know.”
“Sorry. You should go catch a nap before the plane lands. I need a new damn boyfriend is all.” Ava sighs. “Hate sleeping alone.”
My heart jolts and I briefly debate the wisdom of jumping up and down, waving my arm in the air. Decide against it on the basis of possible un-coolness points. “You could try your bodyguard. Judging by the look he gave me when I was on my way in here, he’s dying to play Big Spoon.”
Ava laughs. “Yeah, not even a little bit. Plus, his wife is in my knitting group back home.”
“AVA knitting? From the girl who started the skull-with-pink-bow trend, that’s some serious blackmail, so now we’re even.” She still looks glum, so I skim my knuckles down her arm. “Come on, you’re not really alone. You’re on a tiny plane with the world’s most prescient flight attendant, a vampire bat, and a makeup artist whom I suspect of reading the dictionary. For pleasure.”
She laughs, squirming around until she’s straight on the bed again and squinting up at me as a tiny curl falls into her eyes. “You’re crazy weird, you realize that, right?”
“They’re your hand-picked staff, not mine.” I head for the door and pause with my hand on the knob. “I’ll totally stay and cuddle with you, you know. As long as you have sex with me three, maybe four times first.”
“Four?” She pushes her hair out of her face. “Oh, is that all?”
I wink. “‘If you never did, you should. These things are fun, and fun is good.’”
“Oh my God, did you just sex-quote Dr. Seuss at me?” She explodes into my favorite laugh, the gasping snorty one.
I close the door, grinning. Which sucks, because I look like a fool when I realize her bodyguard is still awake, swiveled so he can watch me come out of her airplane’s bedroom.
And he still hasn’t blinked.

Once upon a time, a tour manager and a rock star fell in love on a tour bus.
Many months and miles later, Kate and Danny are trying to build a life together in between two jet-setting jobs in the music industry. But despite their bondage-friendly lifestyle, Kate is rope-shy once the bedroom door opens.
Secretly, she craves something more than professional satisfaction, even though she swore she’d never swap her backstage pass for a picket fence. But it's going to take more than words for this Dom to help his self-reliant submissive realize she's never been more free than when she's tied down.

In my purse, a text message waits on my phone, but I don’t check it.
My assistant needs more supervision than I can afford to give him, the production manager’s blood pressure could really use me running interference between him and the neurotic pyrotechnics specialist, and I should ride the bus tonight to try to repair my working relationship with the backup dancers. I have a hundred places to be and the only one I want to inhabit is Danny’s apartment, in his beautiful silence that always stretches to make me a comfortable part of it.

“Hazen’s use of the frantic energy of a rock band’s tour contrasts perfectly with the slow and seductive dance this couple engages in. Readers are sure to enjoy following The Red Letters on their drama-fueled climb to fame. “ —RT Book Reviews
“To call Playing the Pauses an erotic novel alone would be to belie its equally strong explorations of the boundaries between personal, career, and sexual growth.” —Midwest Book Review

PLAYING THE PAUSES Excerpt

Somehow, our rhythms just…fit together. In another life, I’d be asking myself if maybe, just possibly, he might be The One.
Except it’s not another life, it’s my life and if I find The One? I can give up the man, give up the job, or spend half my time missing my career and the other half missing my lover.
A fist squeezes inside my throat, and I scowl out the window of the taxi. I’m being stupid, letting the fantasy of this week spill over into the reality of my life. I’ve sacrificed everything for my dreams, and I’m not giving them up for a guy. Besides, I know I’m not built for picket fences and office jobs.
And what I feel when I look at Danny doesn’t change that.
I fight the urge to curl my knees into my chest. I wish I had a few minutes alone instead of heading back to the crew—all their knowing eyes waiting for me to lose myself in lust with a musician like so many girls before me.
Danny’s hand flips over and he catches my fingers. He ducks his head and finds my eyes, the question clear in the air between us. I don’t know why he ever speaks, because he can communicate so well with his silence. But right now, even that small familiarity strangles my chest and sends my gaze fleeing for the window.
When I don’t answer, his thumb strokes over my knuckles, and then he takes his hand away.
My fingers twitch at the loss and I look up and realize he’s taking the ring off his middle finger. He picks up my left hand and slides it onto my thumb.
Something jolts fiercely through me; I tell myself it must be fear of discovery. There’s no way it could be excitement because to a girl like me, a ring is just a cage. “Danny, you know I can’t wear this…”
“You play with it all the time. You like it.” He shrugs. “Keep it.”
I glance up. To Danny, it’s really that simple. “But everybody will know it’s yours,” I say hoarsely.
“We’re still stuck on what other people think? Seriously?” His jaw tightens.
I take off his ring, the silver warm like his body, and squeeze it inside my fist until the edges bite my flesh.
“Danny, I’m not ashamed that I’m sleeping with you.” Up front, the cab driver shifts in his seat. I wonder if he’s a Red Letters fan, if he recognized Danny. Well, screw it. If he did, he’d better hear this part too. “There is nothing about you that embarrasses me, nothing I’m not proud of.”
“Maybe not.” His shoulders are hard. “But you think if people see us together instead of separately, that makes you less.”
I shake my head, because he doesn’t understand. He’s the talent, not the crew. Everyone always falls for the star, and Danny O’Neil has no notion of what it feels like to be a cliché.
