I haven't read the first book of the series, Six, from James Crow before i dove into Six Toy. Maybe i should have since i was floored. It's not a book for everyone, that i'll admit. There were many BDSM aspects that don't call to everyone, the biggest obstacle that we meet is the role play that Johnathon and Emma Jane act out together and then the exhibition that pushes all of Emma's bounderies, limits and comfort zone. Would i have benefitted having had read Six before hand? There's much possibility that yes, because i would have known more about all the Angels, Aunt Fee and how Emma Jane and Johnathon got together. Maybe also more about the relationship that was between Johnathon and Heather, considering that he holds so much emotions that he locks away hoping that no one can notice them. Such resentment, anger, sadness... and loss.
No matter what i missed by not reading the first instalment of the series, i still found myself drawn to these two characters. Sure, some aspects of the exhibition wasn't my cup of tea, but James Crow writes it in such a way that you just can't help but be intrigued, to keep reading to find out if Emma has what it takes to be the true submissive that we all know deep down they (Emma and Johnathon) wants her to be. Needless to say that after reading Six Toy, i was hooked and curious to start over again. To know just who is who, what happened, what could happen and to see just who we'll meet in the next book after the Closet.
