When danger lurks in the shadows…

Government secrets are being sold and the newly sworn in President of the United States already feels out of options. Without knowing the full scope of the scandal, the president decides to turn to the one person he knows he can trust—former FBI Agent, Elizabeth James. Her deep distrust of the system is rooted in her unfair discharge from service. Now she sees a chance to restore her reputation and send a message to those that would use their power to destroy others' lives.

Elizabeth James is ordered to do whatever it takes to end a criminal organization pulling the strings of the worlds’ governments to do their bidding. She's also been told that this is completely off the books. If caught, the government will deny all knowledge of her and the mission. Elizabeth was ready to go it alone until a man with a chip on his shoulder mysteriously helps her when she’s under fire.

Dalton Cage had led his small group of elite Air Force Pararescuemen into the most dangerous parts of the world to rescue civilians and soldiers alike. He thought his time spent evading enemy fire was over after he was booted for ignoring an order he believed to be wrong. But enemy fire was nothing compared to the dangers he faced when he was offered a chance at redemption. All he had to do was provide back up to an undercover agent and he’d get a chance to rejoin his pararescue team. Danger strikes early and often as Elizabeth and Dalton begin their mission and find their hearts becoming involved. Now every decision could cost them their freedom . . . or their lives.

Excerpt

Lizzy pulled the syringe from her purse as she strode toward the bathroom. She pulled the cover from the needle and placed it inside the small clutch she carried. She pushed open the door to the bathroom and stood waiting for Phylicia to come out of the stall. She heard her whispering into her phone that she wasn’t alone and couldn’t talk anymore before hanging up. She flushed the toilet, but both Lizzy and Phylicia knew there had been no reason to do so.
“Sorry, I just had so much champagne,” Phylicia said as she opened the door. She didn’t get to say another word as Lizzy smirked and jabbed a needle right into her neck.
“What the hell? Elizabeth?” Phylicia muttered right before her eyes drooped closed and she crashed to the floor. Lizzy didn’t feel an ounce of remorse as Phylicia’s head smacked against the marble tiled floor.
Lizzy grabbed her by the arms and pulled. Not only did the marble flooring look amazing, it also provided amazingly little resistance for dragging a body. Lizzy pulled Phylicia out of the bathroom and down the hall before using her bottom to push open the emergency exit. True to Alex’s word, no alarms went off.
Alex let out a low whistle. “I mean, I knew you could do it. I just didn’t think you actually would.”
Lizzy grunted as she hefted Phylicia’s body into the van. “Get her phone and disable it. I don’t want anyone to know where we’re going.”
Alex leaped into the back of the van as Lizzy took over the driver’s seat. As she was putting the van into Drive, she heard the sound of tires squealing as a car took the corner too fast down the alleyway. Lizzy looked into the mirrors and saw a standard black town car racing down the alley behind her.
Lizzy didn’t say a word as she slammed the pedal to the floor. Shots pinged off the back of the van as she bounced down the narrow alley, past cardboard boxes and overflowing dumpsters.
“How did they find us?” Lizzy demanded.
Alex was frantically going through Phylicia’s purse. “I disabled the GPS on the phone,” he muttered as he ripped apart the lining. “There’s nothing!”
Phylicia’s dress sparkled in the rear view mirror, the thousands of sequins hand sewn onto the bodice. “The dress. Check her dress!”
“Why couldn’t she be a man?” Alex groaned as he ran a detector over every sequin. “Got it! I’ll disable it then see what kind of information I can get from it.”
Alex cursed as Lizzy hit a pothole and the van bounced into the air. The car was gaining, but the exit to the alley was close. Twenty feet from the exit, a man in a black suit with a matching black M-16 rifle stepped from around the side of the hotel. He raised the gun and bullets ripped through the glass. Alex screamed five octaves higher than a soprano and plastered himself to the floor. Lizzy ducked and kept her foot on the gas. She’d run the bastard over if she had to. All guilt and worry about crossing the invisible line had vanished the second she saw the evidence her father had collected. She’d been fired and her reputation destroyed because of the bitch in the back of the van, and there was no way Lizzy was going to let her go without a fight.
Dalton tried to open the doors to the restrooms, but they were locked. He looked around and remembered the stairs in front of the ballroom. He’d lost his target, and by the way four men in suits had not so subtly fled the room moments ago, he knew his target was in trouble. Smiling, he nodded to Sebastian Abel, pretending to know him and others in the crowd as he cut his way toward the stairs.
As soon as he was clear of the ballroom, he shoved open the door and started to race up the twelve flights of stairs. His training kept him in shape and he wasn’t even breathing hard when he burst onto the roof. His gun was already in hand as he scanned the roof for other occupants. The sound of tires squealing told him he was right—his target was in trouble.
His black dress shoes crunched on the concrete roof as he raced to the edge and looked over the small two-foot wall and into the alley. At the far end, a van was flooring it as a town car slid into the alley. Straight below him he saw only the tip of an M-16 barrel.
Dalton scanned the rooftop and saw the fire escape at the far end of the roof. He shoved his gun back into the holster as he sprinted toward the narrow metal fire escape ladder. He swung his leg over the side of the short wall and put the balls of his feet on the metal handrails so he could slide down the side of the building.
Eight feet from the bottom, he dropped to the ground while simultaneously pulling his weapon. People were screaming and running as they saw him along with the man now firing the M-16 at the van. Dalton didn’t break stride as he ran straight toward the man and calmly pulled the trigger. It only took one shot. The back of the man’s head exploded as the body fell forward. The van appeared and didn’t slow as it ran over the body before turning right and heading straight toward Dalton.
Dalton already had his gun holstered as he straightened his tuxedo jacket and gave a jaunty salute to the driver. Her bright red lips were opened in surprise, but she didn’t slow down as she passed him. But by the look she gave him, Dalton knew she had taken in his height, weight, and appearance. He smiled as he thought of her wondering who the hell he was. She had no idea that he was her very own guardian angel.
“Who the hell was that?” Lizzy yelled as she raced through downtown D.C., trying to lose the car that had followed her out of the alley.
“Who was who?” Alex asked as he worked on the tracking device he’d pulled off the dress. “Whoever was monitoring this had to be at the event,” he muttered.
“The man who just shot the guy shooting at us. He smiled at me and then gave me a condescending salute. Hang on,” Lizzy said as she took a corner so fast the van tilted onto two wheels. When it slammed down, she filed away the facts on the man who had helped her out. He would be hard to forget with those dark eyes that looked right at her and that square jaw covered in neatly trimmed stubble. Not to mention he could fill out a tux unlike any man she had ever seen.
“Condescending is fine if he’s shooting the bad people,” Alex called as he worked on his computer. “Got it! I backtracked the GPS to the car behind us. They’re the ones monitoring her. The only question is if she knows about it or not. But it’s taken care of now. It’s disabled.”
“Then it’s time to lose them,” Lizzy said with a smile. This was turning out to be rather fun.
